TOP 10

It's...

..nearly impossible to make a top ten list of all the films which I like. But this is an honest try, though many great films was left out. I know that I'm going to get beaten in the head by the fact that I left out some classic masterpieces like; The Godfather, Citizen Kane, The French Connection, Chinatown and Casablanca to mention a few. Or newer additions like; Big Fish, Sin City, Pulp Fiction, The Matrix and American Beauty. But these are the films that I believe I have enjoyed the most during their or my existence in this world.

If you don't agree with me or if you like to make some remarks about the list, feel free to post a comment in my guestbook.

1

Title: The Big Sleep
Year: 1946
Genre: Crime, Film Noir
Director: Howard Hawks
Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall

This is by far the greatest film ever made. Bogart plays private detective Philip Marlowe, who's hired by an old general to investigate a blackmail against his youngest daughter. Bacall has the role of the older daughter and the one that becomes Marlowe's love interest. The dialogue is so intense and the intrigue so difficult to follow that you are just swept away by this film. If you haven't experienced it yet it is no time to loose, head over and buy a copy at Amazon.com now. Thats an order!

Title: Aliens
Year: 1986
Genre: Sci-Fi, Horror
Director: James Cameron
Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn

The first Alien movie is great, but its successor is nothing short of a masterpiece. Weavers character, Ellen Ripley, is found after 57 years floating around in space in the emergency pod. The humans has colonized LV-426, the planet where the Nostromo crew found the Alien spacecraft in the first film, and not long after Ripleys awake from hypersleep a distress call is received from the planet. A dispatch of colonial Marines is sent on a rescue mission and Ripley is hired as a consultant. This is the beginning of the film that I rank as the second best ever made and a film that everyone should experience at least ones.

Title: Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Year: 2001
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy
Director: Peter Jackson
Cast: Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen

The Fellowship of the Ring is by far the greatest in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and well worth the third spot on my top ten list. Peter Jackson made everything perfect and the trip through the mines of Moria is just film making at it's best. If you don't know the story already, shame on you! Go down to the nearest book store and then straight to the movie store and pick up a copy of both the book and the film. Now! But when you watch the film, try to watch all three of them at the same time. The two follow-up's are nearly as good as this one.

4

Title: The Maltese Falcon
Year: 1941
Genre: Crime, Film Noir
Director: John Huston
Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lorre

Humphrey Bogart is Dashiell Hammett's cynical private detective Sam Spade in this intense crime history. A young woman walks in to Spades, and his partner Archers, office and convinces Archer to tail a man she claims is her sisters boyfriend. Sadly Archer is murdered during the job and Spade becomes the number one suspect in the police investigation. While trying to clear his name Spade finds out that the girl is not who she has claimed to be and that everything boils down to a statue of a bird who is supposed to contain priceless jewels; The Maltese Falcon.

Title: Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back
Year: 1980
Genre: Sci-Fi, Adventure
Director: Irvin Kershner
Cast: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford

As you know by now, I have always been intrigued and fascinated with the Star Wars saga. This second installment (or is it actually the fifth?) is the one that has had the biggest effect on me. It is the darkest of the original trilogy and it has a depth to its story that is rare in these type of matiné movies. The first film was groundbreaking, the new episode 1 - 3 is good, and Return of the Jedi is without a doubt a masterpiece. But they are all surpassed by The Empire Strikes Back where everything comes together in a perfect combination. If you haven't experienced the Star Wars universe yet, then it's definitely about time and even if this is the best one, you should see all six episodes in a row.

6

Title: The Usual Suspects
Year: 1995
Genre: Thriller, Crime
Director: Bryan Singer
Cast: Kevin Spacey, Benicio Del Toro

Before the first time I saw the Usual Suspects I must admit that my expectations of the film was very low. But was I wrong or was I wrong? This film has everything a good movie should have. Brilliant story, good actors and a fabulous and unexpected ending. During his interrogation a crippled man tells a story about how he and four other small time crock's was hired by a legendary crime boss. The target was a boat with drugs but during the operation something went terrible wrong. But instead of me telling you what happens next - watch the film! I can guarantee that you won't regret it.

7

Title: The Sting
Year: 1973
Genre: Drama, Crime
Director: George Roy Hill
Cast: Paul Newman, Robert Redford

This is one of the true classics and a wonderful masterpiece that was made during the 70's golden era among films such as Rocky, The Godfather 1 & 2 and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. This is the con-movie with capital C and somewhat started the genre by itself and Redford/Newman is probably the best duo that has appeared on the silver screen to date. Redford plays Johnny Hooker, a young man who is being taught in to a con-man by the elder Luther Coleman. When they accidently con a crime boss they get a price on their heads that leads to the death of Luther. Hooker who is filled with anger and thoughts of payback then turns to an old friend of Luther's, played by Newman, for help with his revenge. If you like to know how the whole thing turn out I suggest you watch the film, because according to me their has only been 6 movies made that is better than this one to date.

8

Title: Where Eagles Dare
Year: 1968
Genre: Adventure, War
Director: Brian G. Hutton
Cast: Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood

Richard Burton is probably one of the best actors that has ever lived and here he is teaming up with a young Clint Eastwood to pull of a dangerous rescue mission of a General that has been captured by the Nazi's. Burton plays Major Smith, a british military that is ordered to lead a deep covered operation into Nazi territory and to rescue the General. Eastwood who is playing an american ranger Lieutenant named Schaffer is at first puzzled why he is involved in an all british operation but soon finds out that the missions purpose is of another and more delicate matter then it seams at first. This is the greatest adventure movie ever made, with a few surprising twists to its plot. I highly recommend that you check it out!

9

Title: Notting Hill
Year: 1999
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Director: Roger Michell
Cast: Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant

First of all I have to point out that I'm no die hard fan when it comes to romantic comedy's. I usually gets pretty bored during this type of film, but with this one something is different. I can't point my finger on what it is, but I truly enjoy watching this film. It must be something with the possibility for someone just like you or me to hook up with a mega-celebrity that affects me. The truth is that I've seen this film more times than I can remember and I enjoyed every single one of them. And that is a reason as good as any to put this movie among my top ten, don't you think?

10

Title: The Young Master
Year: 1980
Genre: Action
Director: Jackie Chan
Cast: Jackie Chan, Biao Yuen

In the late seventies and the early eighties Jackie Chan made several masterpieces such as Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, Drunken Master and Project A. They are all recomendable films but they are all surpassed by the true masterpiece of that time; The Young Master. While searching for his runaway brother Jackie is accidently mistaken for a fugitive. He must now track down the real fugitive to clear his name while at the same time fight of bounty hunters and the police who is trying to apprehend him. This is a roaring Kung-Fu adventure and martial arts at its best. A must see whether you are a die hard Jackie Chan fan or not!
